AKG C 414 Review. Watch Out!
The AKG 414
is a multi-pattern condenser microphone that is found in many top recording studios. This mic is great on so many things. It is a bit brighter than a Neumann U87 and can withstand transients well. The AKG414 also has a bass rolloff of 12 dB/octave below 150 or 75 Hz and pre-preamp attenuation of either 10 or 20 dB.
I use them on piano, toms, hi hats and drum overheads as well as lead vocals and group vocals. They also sound great on high strings.

Watch Out!
There is only one thing to watch out for with these microphones. If you don’t get the pattern switch exactly on the icon they don’t work sometimes. I usually have this problem when the switch is just to the left of the cardioid pattern.
Here are some features of the AKG 414.
- One of the world’s most celebrated studio condenser microphones
- Large 25 millimeter gold sputtered diaphragm format optimized for studio applications
- Dual diaphragm for multiple polar patterns
- High acoustic level capability (140 dB-SPL for 0.5% THD)
- Low self noise (14 dB-A)

I would highly recommend this mic and if you can afford it you should get a matched pair. I use them in pairs more often than not.
