Is The Neumann TLM 103 Worth The Price?

neumann tlm 103Neumann TLM 103

The Neumann TLM 103 is essentially a U87 without some of the features. This is such a great mic that I have four of these microphones in my collection and use them constantly.

I use the TLM 103 for everything from acoustic guitars and strings to vocals and basses.   I don’t use these for anything with super high SPLs or sharp transients like drums or loud guitar amps although it can handle a lot of sound before it clips. It’s super quiet and clean which makes it great for strings and orchestral instruments.

Disadvantages of the Neumann TLM 103

The disadvantages this mic has is that it is limited with its pickup pattern capabilities. It has a single cardioid pattern. It also has no low-end roll off or pad which makes its use somewhat limited but it is about $2000 less than the U87.
